Effects of Maternal Depression

Depression during pregnancy and the postpartum period is a relatively common disorder that robs women of early positive parenting experiences. Maternal depression also has a significant negative impact on the infants and children of these mothers. Effects of Adverse Birth Events on Maternal Mood, Maternal Functional Status and Infant Care

High levels of maternal depressive symptoms caused by unplanned adverse events during labor or delivery are associated with parenting and infant attachment issues, behavioral problems and cognitive effects. Omega-3 Fatty Acids for Perinatal Depression: Rationale, Evidence, and Directions for Future Research

Omega-3 fatty acids are nutritional components with well established health benefits for mothers and babies. Evidence suggests omega-3 fatty acids have a role in mood disorders, including epidemiological and treatment studies. Dr. Freeman will review the rationale for consideration of omega-3 fatty acids in perinatal depression, pilot data, and suggested future research directions in this area.
