June 2008

Dear Colleague,

The effects of postpartum depression often reach beyond mom herself and can result in poor partner relationships, which can in turn exacerbate depressive symptoms for both mothers and their partners. Paternal postpartum depression is now being recognized as a mental health disorder, and is closely associated with maternal PPD. Conversely, recent studies suggest that non-depressed partner involvement and perceived support may temper the adverse effects of maternal PPD for both the child and the mother. (Arch Pediatr Adolesc Med. 2007 Jul;161(7):697-703, J Adv Nurs. 2006 Dec;56(6):588-599.)

In this month's First Thursday teleconference, Partners of Depressed Women, Robin Kopelman, MD, MPH, discusses the experiences of partners of depressed mothers and looks at the role those partners play in moderating children's outcomes. For more information or to register, click here.
