June 2011

Dear Colleague,

With Father’s Day coming up we should remember that postpartum depression is thought to affect 1 in 10 new fathers in the United States. Scientists aren't sure what causes PPD in men, but the body of research into paternal depression is growing. Last fall at the biennial Marcé Society Congress, Maria P. Gonclaves, MS presented Postnatal Depression in Mothers and Fathers: Correlation With Psychosocial and Hormonal Variables. This presentation provided an overview of a recently conducted study designed to analysis the correlation of postnatal depression in mothers and fathers with demographic, psychosocial, clinical and hormonal variables and to define "risk profiles" for depression in pregnancy and after childbirth.

Postpartum Support International hosts a "Chat With an Expert" session on the first Monday of each month for men who are experiencing symptoms of PPD or care about someone who is. David Miller, MD, PhD, an obstetrician-turned-psychiatrist who specializes in women's mood disorders with particular focus on Perinatal Mood Disorders, will facilitate the next scheduled men’s chat session on June 8th at 8 PM EST.
