Dear Colleague,
Iowa Health System, which serves nearly one-third of Iowa's patients, has announced that it will begin offering depression screening to all women who give birth at their hospitals and clinics across Iowa, Illinois, and Nebraska. This announcement follows on the heels of a ruling from the Iowa Supreme Court that threw out a second-degree murder conviction of an Iowa mother whose 2-week-old son was found drowned in 1998. In the original trial in 2000, the defense refused to offer evidence by experts that would have shown that the mother had been suffering from severe postpartum depression. The mother will be retried with the new evidence. Perhaps the increased awareness of PPD in the intervening years and the increased support for screening and treatment contributed to the enlightened ruling. The Iowa Health System screening program means more women will be able to recognize PPD and get help so they, their babies, and their families won't suffer needlessly.
