September 2008

Dear Colleague,

What will become of the MOTHERS Act? The bill, which would provide support for services, research, and education in postpartum depression, was first introduced in the Senate in 2007. Last month, Senators failed to garner enough votes to move forward toward consideration of the Advancing America’s Priorities Act, an omnibus bill that includes the Melanie Blocker Stokes MOTHERS Act bill. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said the Act must wait for a new congress to take it up again, but Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK), who has blocked each piece of legislation in the omnibus, has said, “We’ll go back and try to work with everybody on the concerns we have with each the bills and see if we can get them so they can go through by unanimous consent. They shouldn’t be a package.”(CQ.com, July 28, 2008) Either way, advocates for research and women's access to treatment and education about PPD will have to continue to increase awareness of PPD; perhaps greater knowledge of PPD will embolden lawmakers to ultimately pass the legislation.
